Lessons

With over a decade of experience teaching piano, theory, and composition, I offer students comprehensive, conservatory-level training in a fun, supportive environment.
It is my goal not just to teach but to share my love and passion for music with others - to show you or your child the craft of making music.

For more details, feel free to further explore this page, or you can contact me to schedule a free, no-obligation, introductory lesson.

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy has been developed over many years of working with students of all ages and learning styles. Here are some of the highlights of my approach:

Music as a Language – In many ways, learning music is like learning a new language. Children first learn to speak and listen to language; they then develop writing and grammatical skills. Similarly, students should learn to play by listening first. Initially, students use no written music, but learn elementary songs though hearing and then playing back. Once this skill has been explored, students receive instruction in written notation and music theory. These components collectively form the grammar of music.

Supportive Environment – Students' musical endeavors are met with support and encouragement. Students are given the opportunity to learn incrementally, building on each accomplishment, learning through trial and error, and are praised for their efforts. It is in this spirit that students are afforded a safe environment, gaining confidence as they explore and grow in the learning process.

Strong Technical Foundation – Just as a painter cannot explore the art of his craft without a certain amount of technique, so too are children unable to explore the language of music without a certain degree of technical proficiency. Students are taught to play the piano not just with their fingers, but with the weight of their whole arm. This allows the student to play naturally and without unnecessary tension.

Personal Musicianship – In learning the piano, the goal is not just to make good pianists and musicians, but good learners as well. Essentially, the teacher’s job is to help evoke and foster the intrinsically inquisitive nature within students and provide it with direction. Many of the concepts and skills developed during students' musical training are easily applied to other fields of academic study, thereby making students more well-rounded.

Different Learning Styles – Every student learns differently. It is important that students learn with a teacher that takes the time to understand and work with his or her particular learning style. With Troy, students learn through demonstration, analogy, and stories -- collectively drawing from his experience to help formulate a comprehensive and personalized lesson plan.

Different Musical Styles – No two musicians are exactly the same. Students should be given the opportunity to explore their musical preferences and style on an individual basis. No student is forced to play in one particular style or use one particular approach. All students, however, will be given a strong technical and musical background that can then be applied to any genre.
