Performer, teacher and composer Troy Lucia is an accomplished, Boston-based musician.
As a performer, Troy is very versatile, playing in styles such as jazz, pop, fusion, classical and others. For over a decade he has played for weddings, parties, cocktail hours, on the radio and for other events throughout New England. As an accompanist, Troy has played with all types of musicians. He has worked with jazz, pop, and classical vocalists, as well as with bands and instrumental ensembles.
Troy likes to share his love of music with others, so teaching is an integral part of Troy’s profession and style. Troy has been an educator with organizations such as Aces, Musica and Hampstead Academy Middle School. He has also taught private lessons extensively, working with students of all ages. Over time, Troy has developed his own teaching method that includes a focus on proper body mechanics. His belief is that by developing a good technical foundation, the student will have the necessary basis to explore his or her own musical sensitivity and intuition.
Composition has been a large part of Troy’s career as well. He has studied with many well-known Boston composers including Rodney Lister, Malcolm Peyton, and John Malia. His work has gone through many transformations and refinements over the years. Troy enjoys writing in a wide variety of genres. The common thread he strives for in his music is to make it immediately accessible to his audience, while still challenging listeners to find the hidden dimensions of each piece.
He has arranged and conducted performances of his works in many venues including churches, concert halls, and private homes. He has written for ensembles ranging from rock bands and string quartets to full orchestras. He is currently working on a requiem with poet Joe Gallo, which will fuse the traditional elements of the Latin requiem with Gallo’s poetry. Troy is a member of The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
At the age of 15, Troy became the youngest organist to hold the position of Music Minister at First Baptist Church in Plaistow, New Hampshire. Since then, he has been actively involved with organ music, directing several choirs and conducting community events, including the “Wonder of Christmas Cantata.” He is currently the Musical Director at the First Lutheran Church of Lynn, Massachusetts. Troy is a member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO).
In high school, Troy was given special permission to leave school to take college level courses in theory at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music (NEC), where he attended after graduating high school. During his freshman year at NEC, Troy was hired by the theory department as a teaching assistant - a rare privilege for a freshman. Troy went on to receive his Bachelors of Music from New England Conservatory of Music with highest honors.
